JOE: OAHU’S SOUTH SHORE HAS SOME OF THE STATE’S MOST POPULAR BEACHES. BUT AFTER SUFFERING FROM SEVERE SKIN INFECTIONS…SOME ARE WARNING OTHERS ABOUT HARMFUL BACTERIA THEY GOT FROM THE OCEAN. SARA MATTISON JOINS US MORE WITH OUR TOP STORY. SARA? SARA: JOE– THERE ARE A VARITY OF BACTERIA THAT LIVE IN OUR OCEAN…AND THE STATE DOES MONITOR SOME OF THE POTENTIALLY HARMFUL ONES. BUT TWO INDIVIDUALS WHO LOVE THE WATER WANT OTHERS TO BE CAREFUL ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE AN OPEN WOUND. KAIMUKI RESIDENT DAVEY TEMPLE SAYS BACK IN FEBRUARY SHE CUT HER FOOT ON CORAL AT THE BEACH NEAR THE OUTRIGGER CANOE CLUB. DAVEY TEMPLE: DAYS LATER IT WAS IT JUST BLEW UP INTO A BIG HUGE MESS AND I TOOK MYSELF TO THE HOSPITAL TEMPLE SAYS HER CUT GOT INFECTED BY GROUP A STREP AND IT WAS NECROTIZING..OR KILLING THE TISSUE. DOCTORS EVEN TOLD HER AMPUTATION MAY BE NECESSARY. DAVEY TEMPLE: I DIDN’T WANT AN AMPUTATION SO THAT’S ONE REASON THEY WORKED REALLY HARD TO KEEP MY ON IV FOR TWO WEEKS OTHERWISE I WASN’T GOING TO BE HERE DR. ROBERT SCHULZ HAS WORKED WITH MANY PATIENTS WHO HAD NECROTIZING FASCIITIS ALSO KNOWN AS THE FLESH-EATING DISEASE. HE SAYS GROUP A STREP CAN BE INVASIVE. DR. ROBERT SHULZ: THE NECROTIZING FASCIITIS THAT IS REALLY AGRESSIVE IS USUALLY CAUSED BY GROUP A STREP BUT IT CAN ALSO BE CAUSES BY STAPH AND OTHER GERMS LIKE THAT DR. ROBERT SHULZ: STREP IS VERY COMMON AND IS EVERYWHERE AND WHY IT WILL IMPACT SO RAPIDLY ON SOME PEOPLE WE DON’T KNOW GUY STEELE: THIS PAST SUMMER THIS WOULD BE MY BACKYARD MY PLAYGROUND AND TWICE I HAVE CONTRACTED CELLULITIS EAST OAHU RESIDENT GUY STEELE TELLS US HE GOT HIS SKIN INFECTIONS FROM A BACTERIA CALLED ENTEROCOCCUS WHICH DOCTORS SAY IS USUALLY FOUND IN SEWAGE GUY STEELE: BOTH TIMES THAT I CONTRACTED IT ON THE SOUTH SHORE I HAD OPEN WOUNDS STEELE ADMITS THE WATER LOOKED POLLUTED BUT SAYS HE DECIDED TO TAKE HIS CHANCES. THAT’S SOMETHING HE SAYS OTHERS SHOULD LEARN FROM…AND STAY OUT OF THE WATER WHEN IT’S BROWN, THERES WARNING SIGNS POSTED, OR IF YOU HAVE OPEN GUY STEELE: I WOULD ADVISE PEOPLE TO TAKE IT VERY SERIOUSLY AND ALWAYS HAVING SOMETHING TO CLEAN YOUR WOUND THE MINUTE YOU GET OUT OF THE WATER

  1. Coral reefs are the worse to get cuts from. And with people catching these infections should never go in with cuts or scratches !!!

  2. She never cleaned it. Gotta scrub. Cmon lady. Also, if youre new to hawaii, you arent prepared, biologically. I bet the little kids didnt get infected.

  3. All the brownies at poke’i bay seem fine. Gotta be a white ppl thing. Either that or Waikiki is just dirty as a medieval mug.

  4. All the homeless she she and dodo get washed into the water. No forget the dog piss and dodo, the cats piss and dodo and the bird dodo. Rat piss and dodo too. Human spit too and snot… oh yeah, even if you no clean yo crack and crevices too… you know what I mean… PILAU
