Aneurin Bevan Universtiy Health Board GP Cold and Flu Advice

My name is Alun Edwards I’m a GP in Village Surgery Llanbradach I think it’s fair to say we’ve had a really busy week here in surgery and I think my colleagues in hospital tell me they’ve been extremely busy aswell There is lots of coughs and colds And flu like illnesses around at the moment And patients are understandably concerned I think the difficulty we have is that obviously in terms of coughs and colds and the flu these are viral infections And there is very little that we can do to help really Viral illnesses tend to last maybe a week, fourteen days patients will feel quite poorly they’ll have a cough, runny nose, sore throat maybe aching But these symptoms tend to settle down and if people are fit and well their symptoms will settle of their own accord Antibiotics make little difference to these symptoms And will often cause people to feel worse Give them vomiting and diarrhoea and occasionally patients will get a rash aswell So antibiotics are not appropriate and best avoided We do understand patients being concerned And I think the first port of call for paitients to speak to would be NHS Direct Or speak to the local pharmacy Pharmacists have lots of sensible information and often help with some of the symptoms Paracetamol or asprin or anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen are helpful But often times these symptoms just settle of their own accord
