CHEST BREATHING: SCIENCE OF BREATHING

SHALLOW WATERS ARE NOISY;
DEEP WATERS ARE SILENT. Namaste Friends Shallow breathing or Chest breathing. So in chest breathing, the ribcage, intercostal
& accessory muscles expands from all the 3 sides. i.e Anterior, Posterior & Laterals, So there
is 360 degree breathing i.e expansion and contraction of the lungs. your diaphragm will move a little bit and
there is very less or no expansion in the abdomen. In fact some times the abdomen is sucked in
when you breathe in . It activates you sympathetic cardiovascular
dominance. i.e it activates you fight and flight response. Let us first understand a little bit of anatomy
of the chest i.e intercostal & accessory muscles, than only its easy to understand about what
I am talking. What is intercostal muscles ?The intercostal
muscles are mainly involved in the mechanical aspect of breathing. These muscles help expand and contract the
size of the chest cavity to help breathing. What is accessory muscles ?
Sternoclaedomastoid, Scalene & Upper trapezius. By using the accessory & intercostal muslces,
Lungs get maximum amount of oxygen but in stressful situation. only for short periods of time, as it requires
a lot of muscular effort & overusing them will eventually leave you feeling fatigues
and anxious. All of this makes upper chest breathing exhaust
rather than restorative. It also increase in mental stress & tension. The accessory muscles of respiration are only
used under conditions of high metabolic demand or increased physical activity i.e exercise,
running, high intensity training or respiratory disorders. Chest breathing often occurs in people with
ie. asthma, COPD, bronchitis, emphysema, anxiety disorder, hyperventilation, pneumonia,etc.. Also people with beer bellies, pregnant women,
women wearing a corset or if you had a very heavy meal.. well in most of these cases they
would be doing chest breathing. Chest breathing is also know as hypopnea as
it results in build up of carbon-dioxide known as hypercapnia, a neuromuscular disorder that
includes muscular dystrophy, polio or post-polio syndrome & others. Chest breathing also decrease the PH level
below 7 in blood and makes it acidic that will result in various disorders of the body. Chest breathing fills the middle portion of
the lungs i.e the middle lobe, lung will expand with limited capacity. Friends chest breathing is not good specially
if you are speaking or breathing at rest. But in the later videos I will let you know
how combining the chest breathing with other method of breathing will help you go deeper
in your breath. That its for the day…Thank you for watching,
see you soon take care keep smiling… Are you getting it….. Friends do comment below your thoughts about
this type breathing. Namaste.
