CHRONICLING THE STORIES AND
PEOPLE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN
OUR COMMUNITY. THIS IS KETV NEWSWATCH SEVEN’S
CHRONICLE. HER DAVID: GOOD MORNING AND
WELCOME TO CHRONICLE. I’M DAVID EARL. HEALTH OFFICIALS ACROSS THE
COUNTRY ARE SCRAMBLING FOR
ANSWERS AS THE VAPING EPIDEMIC
HERE’S WHAT WE KNOW RIGHT NOW. THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL
AND PREVENTION REPOR
CONFIRMED CASES OF ILLNESSES
RELATED TO VAPING. AT LEAST 17 PEOPLE HAVE DIED
ACROSS THE UNITED STATES. IN IOWA, NEARLY TWO DOZEN PEOPLE
ARE SICK, AND ANOTHER ELEVEN ARE
AFFECTED IN NEBRASKA. LAST WEEK, NEBRASKA DHHS
CONFIRMED THE FIRST DE
RELATED TO VAPING IN THE STATE. 68-YEAR-OLD JOHN STEFFEN WAS A
LIFE-LONG SMOKER WITH COPD AND
EMPHYSEMA. ING NICOTINE
CARTRIDGES FIVE YEARS AGO. IN MAY, HE WENT TO THE HOSPITAL
FOR PNEUMONIA AND DIED TEN DAYS
LATER. THENE
KATHLEEN GOT A CALL FROM DHHS,
INFORMING HER THAT HER HUSBAND’S
>>WHY DIDN’T IT LOOK LIKE A
LIFETIME SMOKERS BAD LUNGS AND
THEY SAID ITS DIFFERENT IT’S CLEARLY DIFFERENT. DAVID: A STATE DOCTOR SAID
STEFFEN’S LUNGS SHOWED GROUND
GLASS OPACITY, THAT IS A
CONDITION THAT HEALTH EXPERTS
HAVE LINKED TO VAPING. JOINING ME NOW IS JOHN’S WIFE
KATHLEEN ANDTER
DULCIA. THANK YOU BOTH FOR BEING HERE. TELL ME ABOUT JOHN WHAT WAS HE
LIKE? —
WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW
ABOUT JOHN?>>HE WAS A HUSBAND, FATHER,
GRANDFATHER. MUCH. HE WAS AN OUTDOORSMAN. HE GREW UP ON A FARM
WHISTLED A LOT, PLAYED THE
GUITAR. DAVID: I SEE YOU BROUGHT A
SHADOWBOX. THOSE ARE GREAT MEMORIES OF YOUR
DAD.>>THERE’S A LITTLE BIT OF
EVERYTHING ABOUT HIS LIFE, FROM
HIS TRACK RECORD, SOME
METALS, THE LETTER HE RECEIVED
IN HIGH SCHOOL FROM CEDAR
CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL. MUSIC NOTES, FLOWERS FROMA SUM
BOX. DAVID: YOU HAD NO IDEA HIS DEATH
WAS CONNECTED TO VAPING UNTIL
YOU GOT THE CALL. TELL ME ABOUT THE CALL.>>I GOT A VOICEMAIL, WE MISSED
EACH OTHER AND HE SAID I
UNDERSTAND YOU’RE RELATED TO
SOMEONE WHOSE DEATH MAY HAVE
BEEN RELATED TO VAPING. I CALLED BACK AND SAID I DIDN’IN
LIFELONG SMOKER, HE HAD COPD,
AND WAS DIAGNOSED WITH
PNEUMONIA. THEN I LEARNED AFTER 30 MINUTES
THEY THOUGHT IT WAS.D THEY SAY A
HOW CAN THEY TELL THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN A LIFETIME OF SMOKING
AND FIVE YEARS OF VAPING?>>>>THEY TOLD ME ON A CT
VACANCY PNEUMONIA IN ONE PART OF
HIS LUNG, WHICH IS WHAT HE HAD
BEEN TOLD BY HIS PRIMARY CARE. THEY COULD SEE THE EMPHYSEMA
BUT THE SPACES IN BETWEEN ON ALL
OF HIS LUNGS WAS COVERED WITH
THE GROUND GLASS APPEARANCE. U WOULD FINDIN A LIFELONG SMOKER
DAVID: YOUR DAD WAS A LIFELONG
SMOKER. HOW DID HE FEEL ABOUT THE VAPING
DID HE HAVE THE FEELING THAT ALT
SMOKING?>>YES, HE PICKED UP VAPING TO
TRY AND QUIT SMOKING YEARS AGO
AND TAPER OFF. HE COULD NOT QUIT THE HABIT, BUT
WE ALL ASSUMED IT WAS HEALTHIER,
AND THAT’S THE WAY IT WAS
MARKETED. A HEALTHIER ALTERNATIVE, NO
SECONDHAND SMOKE. WE ASSUMED IT WAS HEALTHIER. DAVID: WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT
THE DEVICE AND PRODUCTS HE WAS
USING? VAPING PRODUCTS HE
GOTTEN AT THE STORE?>>RIGHT. IN HIS C
HE NEVER USED ANY THC OR
REFILLED ITEMS. IT WAS ALWAYS SEALED, BOUGTORES. THAT’S WHAT WE WANT PEOPLE TO
KNOW. IT WAS THE STUFF MONITORED AND
CONTROLLED. IT STILL CAUSED THIS. DAVID: AS HE WAS VAPING FOR FIVE
YEARS OR SO, WHAT WAS YOUR
IMPRESSION OF THE PRODUCTS? YOU THOUGHT IT WAS
ALTERNATIVE?>>RIGHT. AS MY DAUGHTER MENTIONED, NO
SECONDHAND SMOKE. WE THOUGHT IT WAS BETTER FOR THE
REST OF US. ALTHOUGH T
OUT, BUT IT DIDN’T SMELL LIKE
CIGARETTE SMOKE. WE DID THINK IT WAS SAFER FOR US
AND HIM. DAVID: WE HEARD FROM A LOT O
PEOPLE WHO ARE PASSIONATE IN THE
VAPING COMMUNITY AFTER JOHN’S
STORY. THEY ARGUED THESE PRODUCTS ARE
NOT HARMFUL OR ARE NOT FEELING
THE SIDE EFFECTS THAT MAY BE
ASSOCIATED WITH THE PRODUCTS. I WONDER WHAT YOWOULD WANT TO
TELL THOSE PEOPLE.>>I WOULD SAY THAT WE REALLY
YOU MAY FEEL FINE, AND MY
HUSBAND USED TO SAY WHEN HE WAS
STILL SMOKING “MY GRANDPA LIVED
TO BE 80 AND SMOKED ALL HIS
LIFE.” YES, THAT HAPPENS, BUT WE KNOW
CIGARETTES ARE BAD. WE DON’T KNOW ABOUT THIS. IT IS RISKIER IN SOME WAYS
USING A PRODUCT TO BE SUCKING
SOMETHING INTO YOUR LUNGS AND
YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT IT’S DOING,
OR IF IT IS DOING SOMETHING, WHY
OR HOW IT’S DOING IT.>>WE ARE ONLY BEGINNING TO
START THE RESEARCH INTO THIS. THEY JUST KNOW CONNECTED HIS
DEFROM MAY. AS THE DOCTORS IN THE STATE AND
EVERYONE ELSE START RESEARCHING,
WE WILL FIND MOR
THERE NEEDS TO BE MORE RESEARCH
DONE ON WHAT IT’S DOING, WHO IT
IS AFFECTING. DAVID: THE OUTCOMES OF SMOKING
ARE PRETTY WELL KNOWN. I WONDER IF YOU THINK JOHN WOU
HAVE BEEN SAFER CONTINUING TO
SMOKE? QUESTION. IT HAS CROSSED MY MIND. THAT’S THE PROBLEM. WE DON’T KNOW. A LOT OF THE PUBLICITY THAT WE
HEAR IS ABOUT YOUNGER, MOSTLY
MEHO USE THC. HE DID NOT. AS I HAVE READ ABOUT OTHER CASES
OF DEATHS, THEY TEND TO BE OLDER
MEN. DAVID: I THINK THAT IS THE
REMARKABLE THING. THIS HAPPENED IN A CASE WHERDUCT
BOUGHT FROM A STORE THAT WASCOTI
ALTERNATIVE. NO BLACK-MARKET PRODUCTS OR
>>NOTHING, NO ALTERNATIVE
FILLERS OF ANY KIND. THAT’S THE MESSAGE FOR ANYBODY
WHO IS VAPING AND THINKS IT IS
SAFE. WE JUST DON’T KNOW.>>I WONDER IF YOU HAVE THOUGH
ABOUT WHAT A SOLUTION MIGHT BE. DO YOU WANT SOME KIND OF ACTIONA
BETTER WARNING LABELS?>>I DON’T THINK IT SHOULD BE
BANNED, UNLESS WE CAN PROVE
BEYOND REASONABLE DOUBT THAT IT
IS VERY DANGEROUTROLLED
IT SHOULD HAVE MORE WARNING
WE NEED TO DO MORE RESEARCH. WE DIDN’T KNOW THAT THERE COULD
BE CANCER AND ALL OF THESE LUNG
PROBLEMS. WE ARE FOLLOWING THE SAME
PROCESS WE DID YEARS AGO WITH
OTHER THINGS. I WANT TO SEE MORE RESEARCH DONE
AND HEALTHIER PRODUCTS CREATED. MORE WARNINGS. JUST A BETTER EDUCATION ALL
AROUND.>>ESPECIALLY FOR TE
>>I HAVE THREE TEENAGERS. I WATCH TEENAG
THE
IN THE WORLD VAPING. I WOULD HATE FOR MY DAUGHTER TO
HAVE JUST LOST GRANDPA AND END
UP HAVING A FRIEND IN THE
HOSPITAL. THESE KIDS THAT DON’T KNOW AS
MUCH, THEY THINK IT IS COOL. DAVID: WHAT HAS THAT
CONVERSATION BEEN LIKE? WHAT DO YOU TALK ABOUT?>>IT IS NICOTINE, IT IS
ADDICTIVE, AND WITHOUT ALL OF
THE RECENT OUTBREAKS, IT IS NOT
AS SAFE. STAY AWAY FROM IT. MY KIDS HAVE BEEN TALKING TO
THEIR FRIENDS AND ENCOURAGING
THEM TO STOP AND ARE HELPING
SHARE OUR STORY. DAVID: THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE
THIS MORNING ON THIS IMPORTANT
TOPIC AND SHARING
STILL AHEAD. NEW CHANGES IN VAPING
LEGISLATION ACROSS AMERICA. WE’LL HAVE MORE ON WHAT
LAWMAKERCHANGE. PLUS, A LOCAL DOCTOR WEIGHS IN

  1. 68 year old John Stefen was a life-long smoker with COPD and enfesima.

If John really did die from using a nicotine vape then he'd be the first that I've ever read about.

    But… he didn't.

He died because he "was a life-long smoker with COPD and enfesima." and he was "68 years old"

He did not die from vaping, he died because he smoked cigarettes. It was too late for him.

Perhaps his family might want to admit this and start saving lives instead of blaming something which might have saved him.

Instead, they're condemning thousands of people just like John to the very same thing that killed him by driving people away from e-cigarettes. I doubt John would have liked that.

This is tragic on so many counts – but mostly because the media are using them and their story as a scapegoat to ban a lifesaving product.

You really can't make this stuff up.

    Google:

"e-cigarettes could stub out tobacco bonds sooner than thought"
    "Wisconsin THC empire"
    "tobacco master settlement agreement"

That's why they wanted his wife and daughter in the studio talking to the nation.
