COUGH, SORE THROAT, FEVER IS IT A COLD OR THE FLU? THERE IS A DIFFERENCE. WELCOME TO MEMORIAL HEALTH AND YOU. WITH US TODAY IS DR. CAROL ANN SMITH, FROM MEMORIAL LONG BEACH WALK-IN CLINIC. DR. SMITH, DOES IT MATTER WHETHER YOU CAN TELL THE DIFFERNCE?
ABSOLUTELY, IDENTIFYING THE FLU EARLY MEANS WE MAY BE ABLE TO GIVE YOU AN ANTIVIRAL MEDCINE THAT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL A WHOLE LOT BETTER, A WHOLE LOT FASTER. ONCE YOU’VE HAD SYMPTOMS FOR 48 HOURS HOWEVER, THE ANTIVIRAL IS NOT NEARLY AS EFFECTIVE. SO WHEN YOU RECOGNIZE THE FLU, TRY TO SEE YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THE COLD AND THE FLU ARE CAUSED BY TWO DIFFERENT VIRUSES. THE COLD VIRUS INFECTS UPPER BRONCHIAL TUBES, BUT THE FLU VIRUS MOVES INTO THE TUBES WITH AN AGRESSIVE INFECTION THAT SPREADS QUICKLY TO THE REST OF THE BODY. HOW CAN WE TELL THE DIFFERENCE?
COUGHING AND CONGESTION ARE COMMON WITH BOTH VIRUSES. BUT WITH THE FLU THE COUGH WILL BE DRY. AND THE NOSE WILL BE STUFFY RATHER THAN RUNNY. UNIQUE SYMPTOMS OF THE FLU INCLUDE HIGH FEVER, EXHAUSTION, NAUSEA, DIARRHEA, CHILLS, AS WELL AS MODERATE TO SEVERE HEAD AND MUSCLE ACHES.
WHAT’S THE BEST WAY TO CARE FOR A COLD OF THE FLU? ONCE THE INFECTION’S TAKEN HOLD YOU CAN STILL HELP STRENGTHEN YOUR BODY AND TREAT SYMPTOMS TO FEEL BETTER. OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICINES CAN RELIEVE SOME SYMPTOMS LIKE, CONGESTION, COUGHING, SORE THROAT, BODY ACHES, HEADACHES AND FEVER. GET PLENTY OF REST DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS AND AVOID CONTACT WITH OTHERS BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW THE FLU IS VERY CONTAGIOUS.
TIMELY ADVICE, THANK YOU DR. SMITH. WE CAN MAIL YOU THIS FREE BROCHURE ABOUT COLDS AND FLU, AND A FREE MEMORIAL PHYSICIAN CLINICS DIRECTORY WITH INFORMATION ABOUT EXTENDED HOURS IN OUR WALK-IN CLINICS, IF YOU CALL US RIGHT NOW AT 228- 868-6500. OR VISIT WWW. GULFPORTMEMORIAL.COM

  1. @TheSnowdolphin the Cold is a Viral infection. So it won't cure the cold either. Antibiotics are to be used only with Bacterial infections.

  2. I have had colds with a dry cough and even a dry cough becoming wet in one of those short periods of time when you feel sick but aren't. During a cold my nose changes between stuffy and runny. Either way it itches and is bothersome when I'm sick.So for me, cough consistency and nasal mucus consistency is not a way to tell the cold and flu apart.I do remember once being sick for a whole month(so sick I couldn't go trick or treat on Halloween that year) It started off like a cold(you know, sore throat being the first symptom and nasal symptoms and cough soon after). So I first thought "Maybe this is a long but mild cold(knowing that viruses can last for a month or more before your immune system wins)" Years later I realized "Wait a second, I had aches at some point in the infection" and so my thoughts are that I had walking pneumonia and it just felt like a long bout of flu because it was from a mild flu virus.
