Could The Common Cold Actually Be Good For Your Kids?

CBS 2 NEWS AT 6:00. CHRISTINE, MAURICE. THANK YOU. KIDS ARE BACK IN SCHOOL AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS. GERMS. DR. MAX GOMEZ IS HERE TO TELL US THAT THIS IS A GOOD THING. IT IS AS LONG AS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE GERMS THAT CAUSE THE COMMON COLD. THE IMMUNE SYSTEM IS LIKE A MUSCLE. YOU HAVE TO YOURSELF IT AND CHALLENGE — YOU HAVE TO USE IT AND CHALLENGE IT TO GET STRONG. AND IT HAS TO RECOGNIZE THE BAD GUYS. THAT IS WHY IT NEEDS TO BE EXPOSED TO THOSE VIRUSES THAT CALL COLDS. IF IT HASN’T HAPPENED YET, IT WILL SOON. THEY WILL SOON CATCH A COLD LIKE AARON MISSOURIIER JONES. IT’S ANNOYING. YOU GET RUNNY NOSES. WHEN YOU ARE IN CLASS AND HAVE A COLD, EVERY SECOND YOU HAVE TO BLOW YOUR NOSE. Reporter: AND HER OLDER SISTER KNOWS THIS THAT THE REST OF THE FAMILY WILL SOON FOLLOW. SIX PEOPLE IN THE FAMILY. ONE BY ONE EVERYONE WILL GET SICK AND STAY HOME FROM SCHOOL. IT’S LIKE DOMINOES. Reporter: WHILE COLDS CAN BE UNPLEASANT AND INCONVENIENT, YOU SHOULD LOOK AT IT AS KIDS GO TO SCHOOL TO LEARN READING, WRITING, RITZ MA TUCK — RITZ MA TICK AND GERMS. THEY WOULD NOT HAVE HAD THIS EXPERIENCE WITH BEING SICK. Reporter: UPPER RESPIRATORY COLDS CAN TYPICALLY LAST 3-5 DAYS. ANTIBIOTICS DON’T WORK AGAINST VIRUSES SO THE BEST TREATMENT IS REST, PLENTY OF FLUIDS AND HONEY AND STEAM TO EASE THE THREAT OWN BREATHING. WHEN WE WERE NEW PARENTS, ANY SNIFFLE, ANY CONCERN WE WERE STRAIGHT TO THE DOCTOR. BUT NOW WE ARE A LITTLE BIT MORE PROBLEMATIC. Reporter: THERE ARE SOME SIGNS TO WATCH FOR THAT THINGS ARE A LITTLE MORE SERIES. IF A CHILD HAS A HIGH FEVER AND IS NOT EATING. IS LETHARGIC AND BREATHING RAPIDLY, THOSE WOULD BE REASONS TO TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR. Reporter: DR. POPPER ALSO SAYS TO STAY AWAY FROM OVER THE COUNTER COLD REMEDIES. CHILDREN CAN HAVE BAD REACTIONS TO THEM. IF YOUR CHILD HAS ASTHMA OR IMMUNE COMPROMISED FOR SOME REASON, THOSE CHILDREN SHOULD BE WATCHED NOR CLOSELY. BUT SHE SAYS IF YOU HAVE ANY DOUBT, ALWAYS CALL THE PEDIATRICIAN. DON’T WAIT. STILL EARLY IN THE SEASON.

  1. Okay I have been challenged by germs over and over. When does it stop? It happens each year. So I don't see how it's making the immune system better. Most kids in NY are not in a bubble. This sounds like an excuse to cover up kids getting sick at school way to much.
