Father Warns Of Dangerous Virus Other Than Flu

YES, AND THIS YEAR IS A TYPICAL AMOUNT OF CASES, BUT RSV IS A COMMON VIRUS CAUSING MILD COLD-LIKE SYMPTOMS, BUT FOR BABIES IT CAN BE VERY SERIOUS. REPORTER: 2 MONTH OLD NATALIE IS IN PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE FIGHTING A SERIOUS VIRUS. SHE WAS RUSHED TO THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN FROM A HOSPITAL IN FORT MORGAN. SHE’D STOPPED EATING, HAD TROUBLE BREATHING. IT WAS SCARY. REPORTER: THEY SAY THEIR OLDER CHILDREN WERE BATTLING WHAT SEEMED TO BE A BAD COLD, BUT NATALIE WAS REALLY STRUGGLING. WE WERE AFRAID SOMETHING ELSE WOULD HAPPEN TO HER. REPORTER: THE BABY GIRL WAS DIAGNOSED WITH RSV. IT’S A COMMON COLD FOR MOST OF US, BUT FOR BABIES, ESPECIALLY THOSE UNDER A YEAR OF AGE, IT SEEMS TO HIT THEM A LOT WORSE. REPORTER: THAT’S BECAUSE THE VIRUS CAUSES INFLAMMATION THAT CAN BLOCK THEIR SMALL AIRWAYS. THEY’VE SEEN ABOUT 20 BABIES HERE SINCE NOVEMBER. DAYS AGO NATALIE HAD SOME FEVER- INDUCED SEIZURES, BUT IS DOING BETTER. IT’S PRETTY SAD TO SEE YOUR YOUNGEST KID AT THE HOSPITAL. REPORTER: BUT NATALIE’S WORRIED PARENTS ARE COMFORTED KNOWING SHE’S IN GOOD HANDS. THE RSV SEASON EXTENDS INTO MARCH.
