Got HIV? Higher Pneumonia Risk With Smoking

HIV positive individuals may have a higher
risk for bacterial pneumonia if they smoke. I’m Erin White and THIS is a dailyRx Minute. Smoking is unhealthy for everyone. But for
people with HIV, smoking is even worse. Patients with HIV who are current smokers have approximately
a 70 to 100 percent increased risk of getting bacterial pneumonia compared to non-smokers.
Researchers stated that brief advice from doctors to quit smoking has been ineffective
and that greater smoking cessation efforts for HIV patients are needed. Ask your doctor for tips in quitting smoking
