Highly contagious staph infection reported at Union Elementary School

EMERGENCY SERVICES STARTING AT 6:30. BACK TO YOU. A WARNING NOW FOR PARENTS IN UNION COUNTY. THE DISTRICT HAS CONFIRMED A CHILD HAS MRSA. IT IS A STAFF INFECTION THAT IS HIGHLY CONTAGIOUS. THE STUDENT ATTENDS UNION ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN WINGATE. AND CHANNEL 9’S BLAINE HOLLISON IS NEAR THAT CAMPUS TONIGHT. BLAINE, WHAT IS BEING DONE TO TRY TO KEEP THIS ILLNESS FROM SPREADING? THERE ARE NOTES GOING HOME WITH PARTICULAR STUDENTS AT UNION ELEMENTARY, TO LET THEIR PARENTS KNOW THAT THEY MAY HAVE BEEN IN A CLASS OR ACTIVITY, WITH THE INFECTED CHILD. AND THE BEST THING ANYBODY CAN DO RIGHT NOW, ACCORDING TO THE CDC IS WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY. THEY ALSO SAY, YOU CAN USE HAND SANITIZER. HAS TO BE 60% ALCOHOL AT LEAST TO DO THE TRICK. ONE CASE OF MRSA, A SCHOOLWIDE ALERT TO PARENTS AND TEACHERS AT UNION ELEMENTARY. I THINK THEY WERE PRETTY QUICK ABOUT LETTING US KNOW. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT CONFIRMED THE CASE ABOUT MRSA STAPH INFECTION YESTERDAY. THE SCHOOL DISTRICT SENT PARENTS A LETTER, PARTLY INCLUDING THAT THOSE WHO RIDE THE SAME BUS AND THOSE IN AFTER SCHOOL. IN ADDITION TO THE LETTER WENT HOME, ALL AREAS THE INFECTED STUDENT CAME IN CONTACT WITH ARE CLEANED AND SANITIZED. THE PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE REASSURED PARENTS I SPOKE TO NEAR THE PICKUP LINE. THEY ARE ALWAYS PROACTIVE. ALWAYS HAVE BEEN. MRSA SPREADS THROUGH OPEN WOUNDS. ONE IN EVERY THREE PEOPLE CARRY MRSA IN THEIR NOSE WITHOUT GETTING SICK. BUT IT’S RELATED TO MEDICINE AND CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INFECTION. PNEUMONIA, SEPSIS, AND EVEN DEATH. WHEN THE DISTRICT CONFIRMED THE CASE OF MRSA YESTERDAY, STUDENTS WEREN’T AT SCHOOL. ONLY TEACHERS AND STAFF FOR A WORK DAY. DO YOU THINK THAT HELPED? YEAH. I THINK IT DID HELP. IT GAVE THEM TIME TO BE ABLE TO INFORM EVERYBODY. AND TAKE MEASURES TO SANITIZE THE SCHOOL. AND WE CERTAINLY HOPE THAT INFECTED STUDENT IS DOING OKAY. WE HAVEN’T BEEN GIVEN MANY DETAILS AS TO WHEN THE STUDENTS’ SYMPTOMS BEGAN. OR HOW BAD THEY ARE. BUT THE GOOD NEWS IS, I DID HEAR FROM THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT HERE. AND THEY ARE NOT TRACKING ANY POTENTIAL CASES OF MRSA. ALL RIGHT, BLAINE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR KEEPING US UPDATED. I KNOW THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO PARENTS AND OTHERS THERE TONIGHT. SO WE WILL KEEP EVERYONE POSTED. THANK YOU. AS BLAINE WAS MENTIONING, MRSA IS PARTICULARLY CONCERNING. BECAUSE IT CAN BE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO TREAT. IT IS RESISTANT TO SOME ANTIBIOTICS. AND IT’S NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN JUST DIAGNOSIS BY TAKING A LOOK AT IT. IF YOU NOTICE A WOUND THAT IS
