Know the Signs of RSV: Help Keep Your Baby Out of the Hospital

Clinging tightly to his mommy and his favorite stuffed animal little Adam is your typical 10 month old. But he had a rough start. At just 6 weeks old Adam’s mom Shanisty shot this video because it looked like Adam was having trouble breathing. You could see his ribcage He had a little bit of a V right here He was really labored in his breathing and he was vomiting after every feeding. Adam was diagnosed with RSV a respiratory virus that can make it difficult for young babies to breathe. RSV alone is the single most common cause of hospitalization among children less than one year of age in the U.S. Last year, we have 600 babies being hospitalized at Nationwide Children’s Alone with RSV and probably more than a thousand came to the emergency room. Dr. Octavio Ramilo says most babies with RSV recover without the need for hospitalization. But some developed severe symptoms that can become life-threatening. The first subtle thing is that they cannot take the bottle very well. The second is the breathing is not very balanced. Parents and caregivers can reduce the risk of RSV by washing their hands disinfecting hard surfaces and avoiding sharing dishes and utensils. Very young babies should not be exposed to a lot of people. The immune system the white cells that protect us against infections are not ready yet. Lots of babies don’t survive. We were one of the lucky ones. At Nationwide Children’s Hospital, I’m Niki Chave.

  3. In this comment section is a account names Christine who is a anti-Vaxxer promoting non vaccinations and blaming this childโ€™s illness on vaccinations, please listen to your doctors! They truly know best when it comes to the medical field and have been in training for years to properly give your child the best treatment! Pease do your vaccinations and please do them for your child as well. There have been countless studies about vaccines proving them to be safe and most are in testing for years if not decades before being released for use! There have only been one study linking the MMR vaccine to autism of which the majority of its writers have admitted to its info being incorrect and have โ€œdisowned โ€ it. In addition there have been dozens of controlled studies proving otherwise and there are many papers showing the initial study to have been done incorrectly. Please protect you, your children, and other children who cannot vaccinate themselves by keeping up to date with all your vaccinations!

  4. Hi nationwideschildren, in your comment section is an anti vaxxer trying to discredit you and blame this childโ€™s illness on vaccines! Please donโ€™t permit this type of behavior as this can actually have real life consequences with people actually stopping their and their childโ€™s vaccinations!
