Moyock Elementary School attendance down after virus outbreak

(TOM) THE SICK SEASON IS REALLY SLAMMING ONE LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. (ANITA) THE DISTRICT SAYS — A SUSPECTED STOMACH VIRUS IS PARTIALLY TO BLAME. MOYOCK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN CURRITUCK COUNTY JUMPED TO MORE THAN 100 ABSENCES IN JUST 2 DAYS. NOW THEY’RE WORKING TO SCRUB DOWN THE BUILDING. 10 ON YOUR SIDE’S AESIA TOLIVER HAS MORE ABOUT THE ILLNESS AND WHAT THEY’RE ADVISING PARENTS TO DO. AESIA? (AESIA) WHILE THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT SAYS SHE CAN’T VERIFY ALL OF THE ABSENCES ARE RELATED TO THE SUSPECTED VIRUS, ONE PARENT IS CONCERNED THEY AREN’T DOING ENOUGH TO KEEP THE KIDS SAFE. JAMES NEWBY PARENT OF TWO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS “YESTERDAY MY WIFE WAS AT THE SCHOOL AND THE NURSE CAME TO HER AND SAID YOU KNOW WE HAVE AN OUTBREAK OF THE STOMACH VIRUS AND AT THAT POINT SHE LOST COUNT” JAMES NEWBY HAS CHILDREN WHO ATTEND MOYOCK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. HE CONTACTED 10 ON YOUR SIDE BECAUSE OF HIS GROWING CONCERN ABOUT THEIR WELL BEING SINCE LEARNING AN ILLNESS WAS SPREADING THROUGH THE SCHOOL FAST. JAMES NEWBY PARENT OF TWO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS “THIS IS A MAJOR THING WHEN YOU GET TO HUNDREDS OF KIDS BEING SICK” THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF CURRITUCK COUNTY SCHOOLS, RENEE DOWDY, SAYS IT’S NOT HUNDREDS OF KIDS- BUT IT’S CLOSE. DOWDY SAYS ON AVERAGE, 20 TO 40 STUDENTS ARE ABSENT ON ANY GIVEN DAY OF THE WEEK. BUT OVER THE PAST TWO DAYS THAT NUMBER HAS GONE UP TO JUST ABOUT 140. SHE SAYS THEY CAN’T VERIFY THAT ALL OF THESE ABSENCES ARE RELATED BUT BELIEVE IT’S A SUSPECTED STOMACH VIRUS. DOWDY SAYS THE SCHOOL’S STAFF HAS BEEN WORKING WITH THE LOCAL AND STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENTS TO MAKE SURE APPROPRIATE MEASURES ARE BEING TAKEN TO DISINFECT THE BUILDING. NEWBY SAYS THEY NEED TO CLEAN BETTER THAN JUST IN BETWEEN SCHOOL DAYS. JAMES NEWBY PARENT OF TWO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS “IF IT’S JUST A COUPLE KIDS IT’S ONE THING, BUT WHEN YOU’RE DEALING WITH HUNDREDS THAT’S WHEN THE SCHOOL NEEDS TO BE SHUT DOWN FOR A DEEP CLEANING” AND HE BELIEVES IT’S ALREADY STARTED SPREADING TO OTHER SCHOOLS. JAMES NEWBY PARENT OF TWO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS “ON A HIGH SCHOOL BUS A STUDENT HAS THROWN UP DISCRETION ABOUT THEIR STUDENTS ATTENDANCE, IF THERE IS CONCERN THAT THEIR CHILD COULD GET SICK. SHE SAYS THEY’RE WORKING DAILY TO THOROUGHLY CLEAN THE BUILDING IN ITS ENTIRETY ALONG WITH THE SCHOOL BUSES. SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION HAS ENCOURAGED PARENTS TO KEEP STUDENTS AT HOME FOR A MINIMUM OF 24 HOURS AFTER THEY’VE GOTTEN SICK. (AESIA) DOWDY SAYS STUDENTS PRESENT AT SCHOOL HAVE BEEN REMINDED BY SCHOOL STAFF, INCLUDING THE NURSE, ABOUT PROPER HAND WASHING PRACTICES AND WAYS TO STAY HEALTHY DURING COLD AND FLU SEASON. I’VE REACHED OUT TO SEE IF THEY BELIEVE IT’S SPREADING TO THE LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL AS MISTER NEWBY HAD HEARD AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED AN ANSWER BACK YET. I’M AESIA TOLIVER 10 ON YOUR SIDE.
