Travelers Bringing Home Troubling Stomach Bug

Most people appreciate a souvenir from a faraway
place, but some travelers are coming home with more than they bargained for. I’m Miranda
Savioli with your latest health news. According to a new CDC report, an intestinal
bug called Shigella is spreading to and through the US via travelers. The bacteria causes
the highly contagious illness, shigellosis. This is spread through contact with fecal
matter, and causes symptoms like diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps that last for five
to seven days. Between May 2014 and February 2015, outbreaks have occurred in 32 states
and most of the cases were antibiotic resistant. The CDC suggests several steps to prevent
the spread of Shigella, including washing hands thoroughly, not making food for others
while ill; and, while traveling choose food that is steaming hot and drinks that come
in sealed containers.
