Vomit Machine Sheds Light on Stomach Flu

I’m Gabe Garza with today’s health news. Researchers
from North Carolina State University and Wake Forest University have created a vomiting
machine… No, seriously. These researchers found that vomiting may aerosolize (become
airborne) virus particles similar to how norovirus spreads. The machine allows precise control
of volume, viscosity and pressure, information researchers can analyze. Norovirus, sometimes
known as stomach flu, is the most common cause of viral gastrointestinal problems. According
to the CDC, norovirus causes between 19 and 21 million illnesses each year in the US.
Researchers found that, at most, only 0.02 percent of the total virus in the vomit was
aerosolized. This small amount, however, is enough to infect hundreds of people.
